THIS WAS YOUMARES 7

Starting off as a national students' event, Youmares has expanded over the years to a bottom-up worldwide network and international meeting of young ocean researchers and experts.

Preceded by the annual meeting of the German Society of Marine Research (DGM) and the DGM-Forum, Youmares 7 was again a great success where we could enjoy the various talks and workshops as well as spending time together. Many ideas and contacts were exchanged which is the main idea - and it was truly inspiring.

Around 110 participants joined Youmares 7 at the University of Hamburg. Eleven sessions gave an insight into the research fields of young researchers and students. It is one of the charming aspects of Youmares that also Bachelor and Master students have an audience to present their work. Young scientists organised everything informally, always a hand to give and a hand to receive help, that in the end everyone was sitting with an 'UR-Knall'- beer philosophising about how we can really manage EU-fisheries or dancing their PhDs in the Volt-Bar… Thanks for that experience!

And if you want: download the conference proceedings of YOUMARES 7, including all abstracts, proceedings articles and the programme

DGM Meeresforum and YOUMARES
This year the German Society for Marine Research (DGM e.V.) celebrates its 35th anniversary. On this occasion, the DGM-Meeresforum will be hosted with the aim to promote the exchange and networking of stakeholders in marine research in Germany and develop perspectives for future research goals. Pulse lectures by renowned faculty members and innovative formats such as the "Barcamp" are intended to stimulate discussion between scientists, business and the public and develop ideas for future workshops on selected courses of action within the exploration of the Sea.

The event starts with the DGM General Assembly (September 14th, 2015) and ends with an "Icebreaker" (September 16th, 2015), which is jointly organized with YOUMARES 6. On a boat trip on the river Weser and a mentor program the close cooperation with young scientists is searched.

SPP Antarktisforschung presents: Women in (polar) research - panel discussion

Inspired by last years panel discussion at the ECC in Bremen on networking, we decided to organize  a panel discussion ourselves. At the ECC the discussion drifted into one direction that we want to look at more profoundly now: Women in research! As this will be supported by our partner program  "Antarctic Research with Comparable Investigations in Arctic Sea Ice" we have invited women that are working in polar sciences. Claudia Hanfland from the Helmholtz Graduate School for Polar and Marine Research (POLMAR, AWI Bremerhaven) will moderate the discussion between

FINAL THOUGHTS – YOUMARES 4

Since its humble beginnings as a half-day meeting in 2010, YOUMARES has grown tremendously and has developed into the largest meeting for young marine scientists in Germany. It is now well-known among young researchers as an excellent platform to present results to peers in a professional atmosphere that, at the same time, still manages to avoid the sometimes awe-inspiring character of established scientific meetings. It has also developed a reputation as a good place to exchange, network and foster ideas. In short, it has grown up while remaining young at heart.

From the second meeting onward, YOUMARES has attracted young researchers beyond Germany, and nowadays, it is not unusual to have participants from outside of Europe. The broad range of topics covered, reflects the rich and dynamic nature of young marine research. The diversity of participants and topics, as well as the growth in scope, reflect the active participation and commitment of the community that is behind YOUMARES. When I first became active in the small working group of the DGM from which the original idea for a ‘small network meeting’ developed, I had a vague idea of a potential platform that would reflect the current situation of students in the broad area of marine sciences and would provide some opportunities for exchange of thoughts and experiences. YOUMARES has since outgrown our wildest thoughts.

The wide range of topics and interdisciplinary character for me is one of the most important aspects of YOUMARES. Having spent my post-doc between ecology and social sciences, I know that while the issues faced in marine sciences often touch upon a number of areas, collaboration or even communication across scientific disciplines in most cases remains difficult. This is changing with the younger generation of scientists, who grow up in an academic environment where disciplinary barriers are increasingly blurred. The first step towards interdisciplinary thinking is done when one develops an interest for the questions posed by researchers from other areas, and YOUMARES is a prime example for such broad interest.

Inherent in any organization carried by and aimed at a young constituency, there is a constant flux of individuals – some people choose different paths, newcomers enter the scene. While some may see this as a risk for long-term institutional sustainability, I believe that this is another strong point of YOUMARES. After all, young science, indeed any science aiming to be relevant and innovative, needs to be abreast of current developments and thrives from the influx of new ideas. So far, YOUMARES has found the right balance between consistency and change, and in fact has thrived under constant new inputs.

For the future of YOUMARES, I hope that this event becomes a constant in the European marine science scene, that young researchers will continue to feel compelled to actively network and exchange views, and that this event will continue to reflect the breadth and latest trends of marine research. Certainly, this will also entail changes – I am waiting for the first YOUMARES outside Germany, and the potentials of virtual platforms for collaboration and exchange might be used beyond the planning phase – but I am confident that YOUMARES is here to stay.

Marine science is a small world where networks are important not only for guidance and support, but also for creativity and inspiration. I am sure that even while our professional paths progress from the ‘young’ phase onwards, we will remain connected by the links that YOUMARES establishes.

Dr. Sebastian Ferse
Head of YOUMARES Young Science Committee

A special venue for a special event!

Youmares 3 is organized in close cooperation with EMB Fraunhofer Research Institution for Marine Biotechnology and its local head Prof. Dr. Charli Kruse. The Institute concentrates on fields of cellular technology, aquatic biotechnology and cell-based medical techniques.

We have been looking hard for a decent venue to host this special event and WE HAVE FOUND IT!

The Hanseatic City of Luebeck is, situated at the river Trave, Germany's gate to the Baltic. The Brick Stone Gothic gives the Queen of the Hanse a unique flair of maritime modernity with historical memory. Niederegger Marzipan is probably as well known as Thomas Mann's first novel "Buddenbrooks". In 2012 Luebeck is celebrating having been elected as the German "City of Science". http://www.hanse-trifft-humboldt.de (only in German). The conference venue will be "Die Gemeinnuetzige" in down-town Luebeck. Plenty of accomodation and culinary opportunites in close proximity. Please have a look at our website for further info.
